Art at GJS
Art and Design at Greasby Junior School encourages every child to explore their creativity, express themselves with confidence and develop a deep appreciation for the visual arts. Our curriculum nurtures imagination, teaches technical skills and enables pupils to become independent, reflective artists who understand how art communicates ideas, emotions and stories.
Across Key Stage 2, pupils experience a wide range of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and printing. Each unit builds progressively on key substantive knowledge such as colour theory, form, pattern, perspective and texture, while also developing disciplinary skills such as sketchbook use, refining techniques, evaluating outcomes and responding to the work of significant artists, architects and designers.
Sketchbooks play an important role, providing space for pupils to explore ideas, practise techniques, record observations and reflect on their artistic journey. This continuous process helps children see themselves as developing artists.
Pupils are introduced to a diverse range of artists and cultural traditions, broadening their understanding of the world and helping them develop cultural capital. They learn to appreciate different styles, techniques and artistic intentions from a range of time periods and global contexts.
Through hands-on experiences and an encouraging atmosphere, pupils learn to take creative risks, experiment confidently and express personal ideas. By the end of Year 6, children leave Greasby Junior School with a strong foundation of artistic skills, reflective habits and a genuine enjoyment of art.
