Computing at GJS

Computing at Greasby Junior School equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Our curriculum is ambitious, progressive and designed to help children become safe, competent and creative users of technology who can think logically, solve problems and communicate effectively.

We recognise that digital literacy is an essential part of modern life. Pupils use technology across the curriculum to find, explore, analyse and present information with purpose and independence. They learn to make informed decisions about the tools, programmes and approaches that will best support their work, building their confidence as digital learners.

Our curriculum is structured around three key strands of Computing:

  • Computer science – pupils learn how computers and systems work, developing their understanding of algorithms, coding, sequencing, variables, loops and debugging. They apply this knowledge to create, test and refine their own programmes, simulations and digital models.
  • Information technology – pupils learn how to use software and digital tools to accomplish meaningful tasks such as creating media, presenting data, designing branching databases, editing films and producing digital art. They also learn to evaluate digital content thoughtfully and critically.
  • Digital literacy – pupils learn how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. Online safety runs through every year group and includes knowing how to protect personal information, make safe choices online, recognise cyberbullying, manage digital footprints and navigate an ever-changing online landscape. These skills are taught explicitly through age-appropriate online safety units that build year on year.

Across all year groups, pupils take part in activities that develop deeper thinking, creativity and real-world application. They use a wide range of devices and platforms—such as Google Workspace tools, coding apps, media creation software and data-handling programs—to support purposeful learning. Creative computing opportunities, such as stop-motion animation, digital art, 3D modelling and video editing, help pupils see the transformative potential of technology.

We place strong emphasis on ensuring children understand not only how to use digital tools, but also how technology shapes the world around them. Our curriculum encourages pupils to question, investigate and explore, fostering curiosity and resilience while building the digital skills needed for future education and the modern workplace.

Through this approach, Computing at Greasby Junior School empowers pupils to become confident coders, responsible digital citizens and adaptive thinkers who are well prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the digital age.
