Design Technology at GJS
Design Technology at Greasby Junior School equips pupils with the creativity, curiosity and practical skills needed to design, make and evaluate products with a real purpose. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to solve problems, think resourcefully and work collaboratively, preparing them to contribute ideas and solutions in an ever-changing world.
Each unit follows a clear design–make–evaluate structure supported by essential technical knowledge. Pupils learn how to research user needs, create imaginative design ideas, test materials, use tools safely, build prototypes, refine their work and evaluate the effectiveness of their final products. This structured process develops resilience, logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Across Key Stage 2, children experience a wide range of D&T disciplines, including:
- Structures
- Mechanical systems
- Electrical systems
- Digital world and CAD
- Textiles
- Cooking and nutrition
The curriculum builds progressively, with skills and knowledge revisited and extended each year. For example, pupils advance from constructing simple structures in Year 3 to designing weather-resistant shelters in Year 6; from assembling basic circuits to designing coded digital products; and from preparing simple dishes to creating nutritious meals with an understanding of seasonality and sustainable food choices.
Cooking and nutrition form a vital part of our D&T provision. Pupils learn about healthy eating, food origins, seasonality and safe food preparation, enabling them to make informed choices and develop life-long healthy habits.
Through purposeful, engaging and practical experiences, pupils at Greasby Junior School learn how to design thoughtfully, make creatively and evaluate critically. They leave us equipped with essential skills, confidence and an understanding of how good design can improve lives.
