Maths at GJS
At Greasby Junior School, we aim to develop confident, fluent and flexible mathematicians who can think clearly, reason effectively and solve problems with increasing independence. Our curriculum follows the programmes of study outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum and is delivered through a mastery approach, ensuring that all pupils have a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
We use Maths – No Problem! to provide a coherent, sequenced and highly structured curriculum. Lessons are built around the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract methods, enabling pupils to move from hands-on understanding to more formal calculation with confidence. This approach supports children in developing fluency, accuracy and the ability to apply their learning flexibly across different contexts.
Our intention is that pupils become fluent mathematicians who can:
- tackle mathematical problems efficiently, choosing effective strategies;
- work with both accuracy and confidence;
- apply knowledge flexibly, using a range of methods and selecting the most appropriate for the task;
- explain their thinking clearly using precise mathematical vocabulary;
- show resilience when working through challenging problems.
We believe that mathematics should be meaningful, engaging and enjoyable. Lessons are interactive and purposeful, with opportunities for discussion, exploration and partner work. Pupils are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions and make connections in their learning.
To strengthen multiplication and division fluency, pupils use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) both in school and at home. This supports rapid recall, builds confidence and helps children secure essential number facts. Families can access the platform at

Parents play an important role in supporting mathematical understanding. Each year, strategies are shared at our Year Group Curriculum Meetings, and parents are invited to attend workshops where our approach to teaching mathematics is explained and demonstrated. Teachers are always happy to support families who would like further clarification about specific strategies or methods.
Our school’s Formal Calculations Policy outlines the progression of written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, ensuring consistency across all year groups. Additional resources, including modelled examples and video guides, are available to help parents support learning at home.
Through this structured, inclusive and carefully sequenced approach, we aim to ensure that every child leaves Greasby Junior School with a strong mathematical foundation, a positive attitude and the confidence to apply their learning in the wider world.
