Greasby Junior School

Physical Education at GJS

Physical Education at Greasby Junior School goes beyond sport. It plays a vital role in developing resilience, teamwork, confidence and a positive sense of self, while fostering a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Our dynamic and inclusive PE curriculum offers pupils the opportunity to thrive across a broad range of disciplines, including gymnastics, athletics, dance, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities. Carefully structured progression ensures that children build physical competence, confidence and understanding year on year, regardless of their starting point.

Alongside developing core physical skills, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their performance, collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate leadership. PE lessons promote perseverance, respect and sportsmanship, helping children to understand the value of effort, practice and working as part of a team.

We are committed to providing all pupils with a minimum of two hours of high-quality physical activity each week. This is achieved through curriculum PE lessons, friendly but competitive Inter-House competitions and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and sporting opportunities. Swimming and adventurous activities form an important part of our offer, ensuring children gain essential life skills as well as memorable experiences.

Beyond the curriculum, Greasby Junior School is proud of the breadth of enrichment opportunities available to pupils. These include football, rugby, netball, gymnastics, dance, tennis, table tennis, cross country running, athletics, cricket, basketball, judo, golf, yoga and chess, alongside a rich programme of arts, music and leadership clubs. Residential visits further enhance pupils’ physical, social and personal development, with a three-day Wirral residential in Year 4 and a three-day residential to North Wales in Year 6.

All children are encouraged to take part in these activities, regardless of gender or ability. Our inclusive approach ensures that every pupil can develop new skills, challenge themselves and enjoy being active with their peers. Many children go on to represent the school in competitions, proudly contributing to our thriving sporting culture and our well-stocked trophy cabinet.

Through Physical Education and sport, we aim to inspire confidence, enjoyment and aspiration—ensuring that pupils leave Greasby Junior School with the skills, attitudes and enthusiasm to remain active and healthy throughout their lives.
