PSHE at GJS

PSHE at Greasby Junior School plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development, well-being and understanding of themselves and others. It helps children learn how to form positive, healthy relationships, manage their feelings, make safe and informed choices, and become respectful, responsible members of their community.

Our PSHE curriculum is taught through the Jigsaw scheme of work, providing a coherent and progressive approach that builds on the learning pupils began at Greasby Infant School. Jigsaw brings together emotional literacy, social skills, mental health and spiritual development in a structured, age-appropriate way.

The curriculum is organised into six themes that run across every year group:

  • Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. This ensures that children develop a strong understanding of themselves and others, while reinforcing important concepts such as respect, diversity, resilience, health, rights, responsibilities and personal safety.
  • Throughout their time at Greasby Junior School, pupils learn how to reflect on their actions, manage conflict, work collaboratively and communicate their feelings effectively. They also explore issues relevant to modern life, including digital relationships, online safety, peer influence, physical and emotional health, and preparing for transition to secondary school.
  • Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) is taught in line with statutory expectations and our approved RSE policy. While every child is expected to take part in the RSE programme, parents have the right to withdraw their child from non-statutory sex education, as outlined in the school’s policy available on our website. Where sex education is taught, it is delivered sensitively, respectfully and at a level appropriate to pupils’ age and stage of development.
  • Our PSHE curriculum promotes empathy, critical thinking, decision-making and self-awareness—skills that help pupils navigate growing up with confidence and compassion. Above all, we aim to equip children with the knowledge, understanding and attitudes they need to lead healthy, safe and happy lives, both now and in the future.
