Science at GJS
Science is a core subject at Greasby Junior School, and we fully endorse the principles outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum. Our science curriculum aims to nurture curiosity, deepen understanding and equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to make sense of the world around them.
We place a strong emphasis on developing children’s independence as scientific thinkers and investigators. Rather than simply recalling facts, pupils learn how to question, explore, observe, predict, test and evaluate. We encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time with us and to develop a lifelong interest in science.
Our curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity about our universe and promotes respect for both living and non-living things. Science at Greasby Junior School encompasses the acquisition of key knowledge, the development of conceptual understanding, and the application of scientific skills and attitudes. Across all year groups, pupils study the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics in a carefully sequenced way that builds progressively on prior learning.
Through our chosen scheme, Developing Experts, pupils are introduced to new content in a clear and structured way, with opportunities to revisit and deepen understanding over time. Each unit identifies essential knowledge and vocabulary, ensuring that pupils develop a strong foundation of scientific understanding.
Working Scientifically skills are explicitly taught and embedded across each year group. Children learn how to plan and carry out a range of enquiry types, including observing over time, identifying and classifying, testing ideas, researching scientifically and analysing data. These skills are built upon year after year so that pupils can use equipment confidently, conduct fair tests, record and present findings, form reasoned conclusions and confidently explain scientific concepts to others.
We also help pupils to appreciate the significance of scientific discoveries—past, present and future—and how scientific thinking and innovation have shaped, and continue to shape, our world. Pupils are encouraged to make connections between their learning and real-life contexts, inspiring them to ask questions, think critically and consider the role they can play as informed, responsible citizens.
Through this approach, Greasby Junior School ensures that all pupils are fully equipped with the scientific knowledge, vocabulary and investigative skills they need to thrive in the wider world and to understand the scientific processes that impact their daily lives.
